As the narrator's uncle's research draws him deeper into the mystery, he begins to understand that Cthulhu, a cosmic entity older than humanity, lies dreaming in the sunken city of R'lyeh, waiting for the stars to align. Lovecraft's most influential tale established the "cosmic horror" that bears his name, and remains the cornerstone of the Cthulhu Mythos.
